Dawn Lavergne

PRINCIPAL

AT, DID

  • Dawn is the principal designer and visionary of the award winning MKL Design Studio. With background in both Interior Design & Architectural Technology, along with 25+ years of experience, Dawn is a sought-after designer and an active member of Canada’s home building scene. She has gained recognition on both regional and national levels and is well-known for her abilities to meet and exceed clients’ expectations. Dawn has mastered the art of creating impactful experiences and beautiful homes.


    Dawn believes in giving back and continues to share her knowledge and enthusiasm within the community. Volunteering for organizations such as CICBA, NKBA, Home Builders Association of Calgary, SAIT, and more, Dawn has dedicated many years to these organizations.


    When not designing and volunteering, Dawn can be found lifting weights at the gym, trying to keep up with her three spirited young adult daughters or chilling with a glass of wine and her friend group.

Trevor sutherland

SENIOR ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

BA URBAN STUDIES, AT

  • In 2014 Trevor enrolled in the Architectural Technologies program at SAIT, after a 20-year career in the residential construction industry. Trevor was the owner operator of an exterior cladding company installing siding, soffit, eavestrough and exterior trim. After completion of his Architectural Technology Diploma, Trevor started contracting to MKL Design Studio in 2017. Trevor’s construction knowledge and experience is an asset helping aid in the design of projects at the MKL Design Studio. Trevor’s enjoys the challenge of trouble shooting complex detailing that arise with custom homes. 


    When not at the office, Trevor coaches his son’s minor hockey and enjoys the outdoors with his family and friends.

NANETTE McRITCHIE

SENIOR ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

  • Nanette is an architectural designer and technologist with many years of working in both Alberta and Saskatchewan giving her extensive experience in multiple areas of commercial and residential design.


    Her experience in commercial design includes new building construction, additions, renovations, and tenant improvements.


    Nanette has designed large multifamily projects and retirement communities which include independent living, assisted living and memory care facilities. She has experience in site design and residential subdivision development including creating architectural controls. Nanette has also completed many single family projects that include both new construction and renovations.


    Nanette enjoys architectural visualization by creating 3D models and renderings to help clients envision their space. She has a strong knowledge of the building code and permit processes to successfully complete projects. Her creativity, passion for unique design, and detail orientated approach allows her to focus on creating the ideal space for each client.

With a background in both Interior Design and Architectural Technology, and more than 25 years of experience, she has become a respected voice in Canada’s home building industry. Known for her thoughtful approach, strong design vision, and commitment to exceeding client expectations, Dawn has helped shape countless homes and memorable client experiences.


    Beyond the studio, Dawn is passionate about giving back. She has dedicated her time and expertise to organizations including CICBA, NKBA, the Home Builders Association of Calgary, SAIT, and more.


    Outside of work and volunteering, Dawn enjoys weightlifting, keeping up with her three young adult daughters, and spending time with close friends over a glass of wine.

James stobie

BA URBAN STUDIES, AT

  • James joined MKL Design Studio as General Manager in June 2025, bringing extensive experience in residential design, project coordination, municipal approvals, and sustainable building practices. With a Master of Science in Low Carbon Building Design, his background includes custom homes, renovations, additions, and complex residential projects throughout Alberta and British Columbia.


    In his role at MKL, James oversees the studio’s day-to-day operations while supporting both clients and the design team throughout each stage of a project. He values clear communication, practical problem-solving, and helping clients better understand the design, permitting, and construction process.


    James approaches each project with a balance of creative design thinking, technical knowledge, budget awareness, and an understanding of the practical realities of construction.


    Outside of the studio, James enjoys camping, playing squash, watching Formula 1, and building LEGO with his son.

NANETTE MCRITCHIE

SENIOR ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

  • Nanette is an experienced architectural designer and technologist with a strong background in both Alberta and Saskatchewan. Since joining MKL in 2019, she has contributed to a wide range of commercial and residential projects, including new builds, additions, renovations, tenant improvements, multifamily developments, retirement communities, and single-family homes. Her experience also extends to site design, residential subdivision development, and architectural controls.


    With a strong understanding of building codes, permit processes, and technical documentation, Nanette brings clarity and confidence to each stage of a project. She also has a passion for architectural visualization, creating 3D models and renderings that help clients better understand and connect with their future spaces.

ANASTASSIYA VASSILYEVA

SENIOR INTERIOR DESIGNER

  • Anastassiya’s career in Interior design began 15+ years ago in Toronto, On. Having learned to design from industry leaders in both Toronto and Calgary, Anastassiya approaches design from a unique perspective that addresses function, aesthetic, and a positive experience as equally important components of building a home.


    With expertise in both residential and commercial sectors of the design industry, each project is an opportunity to bring all acquired knowledge as well as learn something new. When creating, a clean, slightly understated aesthetic is favoured, but listening to clients’ needs and translating them into interiors that reflect personalities of homeowners and respect the architecture and the environment are always at the top of the priority list.

NIKKI BLACKMORE

INTERIOR DESIGNER

  • Nikki joined the MKL Design Studio team in May 2021, bringing a wide variety of knowledge from her 4 years of industry experience along with a Diploma in Interior Decorating and a Certificate in Kitchen and Bath Design.


    She approaches each design with an eagerness to bring the client’s vision to life, listening attentively and providing thoughtful, timeless suggestions to create beautiful, functional spaces that stand the test of time. Nikki’s passion for design is prevalent in every project, she enjoys creating spaces for every style, classic traditional to ultra-modern, and everything in between.


    When Nikki isn’t in the studio or daydreaming about design, you’ll likely find her in the mountains, hiking and camping, or re-decorating her home.

NICOLE STEWART

ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

  • Nicole started designing houses at the age of 13 and would come up with the ‘dream homes’ for her friends and family members. She graduated from BCIT’s Architectural and Building Engineering Technology program and has been working in the industry in both BC and Alberta since.


    In her spare time, Nicole enjoys playing board games with her husband, going on walks with her dog and refurbishing furniture.

LANDON REA

ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

AT

  • Landon joined the MKL team while completing his Architectural Technologies Diploma at SAIT in 2022. Following a childhood constantly buried in LEGO, he originally started university with the goal of a career in architecture, but a summer job landscaping quickly snowballed to owning and operating a fullservice landscaping and maintenance company. After 15 years in the landscaping industry, he could no longer resist the call back to the field of architecture and returned to school, graduating with honors and several awards from the Architectural Technologies program at SAIT. Landon is always striving to

    improve upon his understanding of advanced or complicated architectural building systems, as well as the tools and techniques of his trade.


    Outside the studio, Landon is also an avid collector of hobbies and anything creative or DIY; whether it is restoring an old cedar strip kayak, rebuilding engines in his garage, or just gardening at home.

LEVI FRERE

ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

  • Levi joined the team at MKL Design Studio shortly after completing the Architectural Technology Diploma at SAIT in 2022. After discovering his passion for architecture during his time at SAIT, he is motivated and excited to begin his career in the residential construction. He enjoys working on unique projects and solving the challenges that come along with them.


    In his free time, Levi can be found working out at the gym or doing outdoor activities with friends and family.

ANTHONY BROOKS

ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

  • Anthony joined the MKL team a year after completing his Architectural Technology Diploma with honors at SAIT in 2022. With 6 years of experience in oil and gas as an instrumentation apprentice, he has grown into a fascination of complex engineering and design. Anthony has also applied to understand the larger fields of a project with conceptual design of mechanical design and landscape design. He is a creative team player and ready to take on the industry with vast perspectives of experience.


    In his free time, Anthony is enjoying the outdoors and hobbies such as snowboarding, mountain biking and traveling.

MACKENZIE LAVERGNE

MARKETING MANAGER

  • Mackenzie has been a part of the MKL Design Studio team since 2017, working as a multifaceted design assistant. She now works part time as MKL’s social media marketing manager, while she studies full time to complete her degree in Neuroscience.


    In her free time, you’ll find Mackenzie breaking out of escape rooms, camping with her friends, or enjoying a good Netflix original.

EMILY HOOD

ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

  • Emily joined the team at MKL Design Studio in 2023. She holds a diploma in Architectural Technologies from SAIT, graduating with honors and awards as part of the class of 2020.  She is also currently in the Bachelor of Science in Architecture program at Athabasca University, with an expected graduation in 2025. 


    Emily's diverse portfolio encompasses both residential and commercial projects, highlighting her capacity to blend technical precision and artistic ingenuity. Her work consistently mirrors her dedication to excellence, providing designs that are both functional and visually captivating.


    Beyond her professional pursuits, Emily is a multifaceted individual with a passion for the arts. She expresses her creativity through activities such as drawing, painting, and digital and film photography. When she's not in the studio, you'll often find Emily in the mountains, indulging her love for snowboarding, or exploring and finding inspiration in diverse cultures and experiences.

ALVARO GARCIA DICK

ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

  • Alvaro became a valued member of the MKL team following the successful completion of his Architectural Technology Diploma at SAIT in 2023. His architectural journey commenced in 2015 after attaining a bachelor’s degree in architecture in Mexico, where he gained professional experience at various architectural firms. In 2019, Alvaro made the pivotal decision to relocate to Canada to further his education, culminating in the successful attainment of a Diploma in Architectural Technologies from SAIT. His passion lies in the art of design and problem-solving, particularly when confronted with complex architectural challenges. 


    Outside of the professional sphere, Alvaro dedicates his time to leisure activities, such as enjoying a good movie or spending quality moments with friends and family.

  • Emily joined MKL Design Studio in 2023 after graduating from SAIT’s Architectural Technologies program with honours and awards in 2020. She has also continued to grow her knowledge through studies in Architecture at Athabasca University.


    With experience across residential and commercial projects, Emily brings together technical precision and artistic creativity. Her work reflects a strong commitment to thoughtful design, producing spaces that are functional, visually engaging, and carefully resolved.


    Outside of work, Emily is a passionate artist who enjoys drawing, painting, and both digital and film photography. She also loves snowboarding in the mountains and exploring new cultures, always finding fresh sources of inspiration for her creative work.

  • Alvaro joined MKL in 2023 after earning his Architectural Technology Diploma from SAIT. His architectural journey began in 2015, following the completion of his bachelor’s degree in architecture in Mexico, where he gained valuable experience working with architectural firms before relocating to Canada in 2019 to continue his education.


    With a strong foundation in design, technical problem-solving, and architectural documentation, Alvaro brings curiosity and care to complex design challenges. He enjoys finding creative, practical solutions that support both the project vision and the people who will experience the finished space.


    Outside of work, Alvaro enjoys watching movies and spending quality time with friends and family.

Nikki Blackmore

INTERIOR DESIGNER

  • Nikki has been a valued member of MKL Design Studio since early 2021. With a Diploma in Interior Decorating and a Certificate in Kitchen and Bath Design, she brings strong industry knowledge and a warm, collaborative approach to every project.


    Nikki is passionate about helping clients bring their vision to life. She listens closely, offers thoughtful and timeless design suggestions, and creates spaces that are both beautiful and functional. Whether working with traditional, modern, or transitional styles, Nikki brings enthusiasm, creativity, and care to every detail.


    When she is not in the studio, Nikki enjoys spending time in the mountains, hiking, camping, and finding new ways to refresh her own home.

Stephanie BEEMER

  • Stephanie joined MKL in 2024 after earning her Interior Decorating Diploma in 2022. She brings a thoughtful, detail-focused approach to each project and takes pride in creating spaces that feel polished, functional, and carefully considered.


    Known for her accuracy and steady dedication, Stephanie is always looking for opportunities to expand her knowledge and strengthen her design skills. She supports the team with a strong eye for detail and a commitment to delivering work that reflects each client’s goals.


    Outside of the studio, Stephanie enjoys camping, decorating her home, and spending time with family, friends, and her dogs.

aRIANA hAHN

ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

  • Ariana joined MKL Design Studio in 2025 after completing her Architectural Technologist Diploma at SAIT in 2020. She is passionate about transforming ideas into thoughtfully designed homes and helping projects move smoothly from concept to construction.


    With experience in Revit, Bluebeam, and AutoCAD, Ariana develops detailed construction drawings, BIM models, and building code reviews that support both the design vision and technical requirements of each project. Known for her attention to detail, positive attitude, and collaborative approach, she enjoys working with clients and project teams to create homes that are functional, efficient, and tailored to each client’s needs.


    Outside of work, Ariana enjoys spending time with her husband and puppy, especially while exploring the outdoors together on long walks.

CHELSEY HALFORD

  • Chelsey is a dedicated designer at MKL Design Studio with a passion for creating beautiful, custom homes that reflect each client’s lifestyle and vision. Her career began in architectural technology, giving her a strong technical foundation that continues to inform her thoughtful approach to interior design.


    With a diploma from NAIT and a Degree in Interior Design from the Academy of Art University, Chelsey brings both technical expertise and creative vision to her work. Her experience with multiple builders includes high-end custom residences and award-winning show homes, where she has developed a strong ability to bring polished, functional, and unique spaces to life.


    Outside of work, Chelsey enjoys staying active through soccer and camping, and spending time with her husband and son.

FEMI AKOLA

ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

  • Femi is an Architectural Technologist and multidisciplinary creative with international experience spanning Nigeria and Canada. Before immigrating to Canada, he contributed to a variety of architectural and construction projects in Africa, building a strong foundation in design, technical documentation, project coordination, and multidisciplinary collaboration.


    Since transitioning into the Canadian industry, Femi has contributed to institutional, tenant improvement, and residential projects, including recent work with MKL Design Studio. He brings a thoughtful, creative perspective to his work and is especially interested in how technology will continue to shape the future of architecture and the built environment.


    Outside of architecture, Femi works on personal projects as a 3D artist and creative director, creating virtual environments, animations, and digital experiences. He also enjoys playing drums and bass, live music, emerging technologies, and creative side projects.

BRODEY SCHRADER

ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

  • Brodey joined MKL Design Studio in 2025 with a background in architectural technology and a passion for thoughtful residential design. After graduating from the Architectural Technologies program in 2020, he began his career designing mass timber and wood structures for commercial projects across North America and the United Kingdom.


    During his studies, Brodey also completed an international summer program in timber design at VIA University in Denmark, where he further developed his interest in sustainable wood construction and innovative design. He enjoys the balance between technical problem-solving and creative design, and is passionate about creating spaces that are functional, inspiring, and tailored to the people who use them.


    Outside of the office, Brodey enjoys designing and building custom furniture, weight training, exploring the mountains, discovering new coffee shops, and spending time at the family cabin in Saskatchewan.

MACKENZIE LAVERGNE

  • Mackenzie has been part of the MKL Design Studio team since 2017, first joining as a design assistant and growing into her current role as MKL’s Office Coordinator and Social Media Manager. Over the years, she has developed a strong understanding of the studio’s day-to-day operations, client experience, and brand voice.


    With a B.Sc. in Neuroscience from the University of Lethbridge, Mackenzie brings a unique blend of organization, creativity, and people-focused thinking to the team. She supports MKL through client coordination, communications, social media, administrative operations, and team support, helping keep both the studio and its online presence running smoothly.


    Outside of work, Mackenzie enjoys line dancing, volunteering with motionball Calgary, camping with friends, and unwinding with a tv show.
